Rome is a captivating city and one of the best places to visit especially for couples. It is one of the most romantic cities in the world. Couples would find this destination romantic and filled with history, culture, and breathtaking sights. There’s ancient ruins, world-renowned art and amazing architecture that offers a plethora of experiences for visitors to indulge in. In this comprehensive guide, we will look at the things to do in Rome for couples, highlighting fascinating facts about each attraction.
1. Visit St. Peter’s Basilica- A religious grandeur and Michelangelo’s Pieta
St. Peter’s Basilica, located in the Vatican City, is the largest Catholic church in the world and an architectural marvel. It is one of the pivotal points of the catholic faith and tradition. The grandeur of this sacred place leaves visitors in awe, with its vast interior, magnificent dome, and intricate works of art.
Don’t miss Michelangelo’s Pieta, a breathtaking sculpture depicting the body of Jesus on the lap of Mary. Fascinating fact: The Basilica was built over the burial site of St. Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who is considered according to the catholic teachings as the first pope.
St. Peter’s Basilica is open to the public and welcomes millions of visitors each year. It is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike and continues to be an important symbol of the Catholic faith.
I was particularly fascinated by the presence of Swiss guards in their very colourful and eye catching uniform when we visited. Swiss guards protect the Pope and the Apostolic palace.
The waiting times to gain entry can be upto two hours owing to the large numbers of visitors who frequent the basilica. However entry is completely free. So to beat the long queues the best times to visit would be around 7:00am – 9:00am when the crowds are less or late evening. You can book a guided tour which we highly recommend.
2. Couples can visit The Colosseum and witness the grandeur of ancient Rome
One of the most iconic structures in Rome, the Colosseum stands as a symbol of the city’s ancient glory. Built in 70-80 AD, this massive amphitheater once hosted gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and grand spectacles. Today, visitors can explore its interior and learn about the incredible engineering behind its construction. Did you know that the Colosseum could hold up to 50,000 spectators.
We arrived here late in the afternoon and the queues were too long. Unfortunately it was our last day and we didn’t get to go inside. Waiting times are 1-2 hours with ticket so it’s best to book skip the line tickets to save you the hassle.
3. The Pantheon- Ancient architectural brilliance
The Pantheon, a marvel of ancient Roman architecture, is a testament to the ingenuity of Roman engineers. This well-preserved temple was built in 126 AD. It features a remarkable domed roof with an oculus at its center, allowing sunlight to pour into the building.
Did you know that the Pantheon’s dome remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world? Well now you know.
When we visited entry was free but fees were introduced in 2023 which is €5.00.
4. Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is a true masterpiece of Baroque artistry. Built in the 18th century, it is the largest fountain in Rome and a popular spot for tossing coins and making wishes. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you are guaranteed to return to Rome in the future. Additionally, throwing one coin will ensure a return trip. Throwing two coins will lead to a new romance. Throwing three coins will result in marriage. The fountain is also featured in several famous films, including Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.”
Fun fact: An estimated €3,000 is thrown into the fountain each day, which is collected and donated to charity.

Since the fountain is flooded with tourists, best time to visit is earlier in the morning around 7-8am or late at night 3-10pm.

7. Climb the Spanish Steps and admire stunning city views, one of the best spots for couples visiting Rome
The Spanish Steps are only about 9 minutes walking distance from Trevi Fountain. Couples visiting Rome can stroll from Trevi fountain through the beautiful streets to the Spanish steps.
This is a monumental staircase that connects the Piazza di Spagna at the base with the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. Climbing the 135 steps rewards you with panoramic views of the city below.
Also in the neighborhood are the high end designer shops like Prada, La Perla, Via Condotti, Gucci and much more so be ready to spoil yourselves or treat your spouse.
Fun fact: The steps were named after the nearby Spanish Embassy located in the Piazza di Spagna.

I personally found this tour quite fascinating and would totally recommend for couples visiting Rome.

Fun fact: The castle derives its name from an apparition of the Archangel Michael, seen by Pope Gregory the Great, symbolizing the end of a plague in 590 AD.
10. Altar of the Fatherland
The Altar of the Fatherland (Altare della Patria in Italian) is a monument that is worth visiting. It is also known as the National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II (Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II), who was the first king of a united Italy.
The monument was built between 1885 and 1925, and it is dedicated to the memory of Victor Emmanuel II and the Italian soldiers who fought and died for the country’s unification. The Altar of the Fatherland is located in Piazza Venezia, in the heart of Rome, and it is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the city.
